Northwest Contemporary in Magnolia

We recently completed this stunning remodel to a home in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle.  The owners lived in a 1950’s bungalow for close to twenty years when they contracted us, looking for a remodel that would bring more space and a modern look.

Here is the house “before”:

The front entrance was moved to the side of the house, providing space for a large, private patio. The entire roofline was changed, adding 5 feet to the front of the house.  A modern shed style roof gave the expansion space needed to install the full sized windows that make up the front of the house.

Take a look at the old kitchen:

The new kitchen, featuring beautiful wood custom cabinetry was enlarged and remodeled, opening to the spacious dining and living space where the couple entertains.

The owner’s interest in cooking is well accommodated with the new hood system, appliances, and ample storage and dining areas.

This space spills out to the patio, providing expansive views of the Seattle skyline and Puget Sound.

Our Own New Deck

You know how the cobbler’s children never have new shoes?  Well, a little bit the same is true of those of us in the construction industry – we sometimes wish there was more time to make improvements to our own home! However, this summer we saw a wonderful change in our living space with the addition of a new deck made with Azek decking materials.  We even finished it in time to enjoy a 50th wedding anniversary of Maureen’s parents, and the weather was perfect!

If you would like to see other colors of Azek decking, along with other excellent brands of decking materials, you should stop by any of the Dunn Lumber showrooms where they have installations of decks that will help you when planning your next outdoor living room.  Call us at 425 -771-3515 if you would like a complimentary bid on a new deck for your Northwest home .

Curb Appeal

One of the best ways to add curb appeal to your home is to consider your entry way. As you can see from this recent project in Greenwood,  this modest house gets great “pop” from a new covered porch.  This additions adds a great deal in terms of street appeal and property value.

Here is the “Before”

And here is the “After”, with an attractive covered entry, brick pillars and treated cedar steps and railings.

Bring on the Deck!

The weather is beginning to warm up and if you are anything like us, you are beginning to put away your interior home projects and think about projects on the exterior of your home.  A well built and attractive deck allows you to better enjoy the outside world, as well as extend your living space outdoors. A truly great deck is designed with scale and material in mind.

Even at the Haider home, our spring poject is to pick out materials to cover an old concrete deck with something durable, cost effective and attractive.  There are so many choices, that even we are feeling a little bowled over!

In coming posts we will talk about the different decking materials available to the Northwest consumer.  The local standards of cedar and redwood now run up against many imported lumbers: jarrah (a member of the eucalyptus family) from western Australia, ipé from South America, and mahogany from Central America.

At Haider Construction, it is important to us to choose only materials that are sustainably harvested.  Look for FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification―it means these imported lumbers have been grown and harvested in a sustainable manner.
